Upcoming facebook redesign might cause facebook applications in trouble.

Posted by: junal on: June 1, 2008

Does facebook care about our applications? They haven’t developed them, why would they care eh? Hmm that could be the answer. Well, I’m not sure if they care now but they cared that’s for sure. They allowed all applications to send 20 invitations at the beginning because they needed to spread their name all over. They did everything to spread their name. Now they are getting strict because they have got enough users! Well you might say invitation limitation decreased because users are taking them as spam now, I agree. But what about other changes they are doing now? Let’s think about some upcoming redesigned facebook and let’s see what it’s brining for facebook applications.

New Feed: There is going to be a new feed system. According to the facebook they will start deprecating old methods of news feed/mini feeds (feed.publishActionOfUser, feed.publishStoryToUser, and feed.publishTemplatizedAction) once the redesigned profile goes live. With the profile redesign, all feed items will be templated. In order to register all 3 feed sizes at once (one line, small, and full) beforehand, Facebook has added a new method called feed.registerTemplateBundle. You can create as many bundles as you want, and in order to publish a feed story, you just call feed.publishUserAction with the template ID.

So all of our applications have to be updated ASAP. Developers have to play again with their developed applications and revised the code again. As a developer I can feel how painful it will be!

No more automatic profile integration while installing applications: this is will be one of the reasons why facebook application will not spread widely like before. Before it was selected as default that once you add an applications, a profile box gets added in your profile page. In redesigned you have to, “add a profile box to the main profile by clicking an Add New Profile Section button which the application can insert into their canvas pages via the fb:add-section-button FBML tag.

- do you think users have that time to do it. They don’t have time to do it! But one good thing it will reduce the too much clutter in facebook profile.

Profile action links are gone: According to Facebook, “There are no profile action links for third party applications. Instead, users interact with their friends using applications in the Publisher box.”

It will be another reason the stop the applications growth.

Application’s email might be stopped: huh? This was my last weapon to let my friends about the application. This might be stopped as well. If it happens in the upcoming changes then no applications email will go to my friends email.

Yea, I can see a clear intension that facebook doesn’t care about our applications. Now, as a developer we have to find a way to get users in our applications. We have to find all possible ways to spread our application. What is your thought on it? Let me know. I will love to hear. Let’s hope for the best from upcoming facebook changes.
